A contractor did the plumbing work in my house. Some of it is in my living room ceiling. Some of it started to leak after we had moved in and the ceiling was up. We agreed that he would fix it by handshake. The original work was done under a contract. It’s my belief that he should have to fix it anyways. He’s fixed the leak, now he’s repairing the ceiling he had to tear out from the leak, and he left a mess in my house because he didn’t cover anything up. I confronted him about it, because I have a 5 week old baby in the house. He claims he didn’t because we didn’t give him the stuff to cover up the room with, and he doesn’t have that stuff. I told him that was unprofessional, and he threatened not to come back and finish. He said he didn’t have to finish. Is there anything I can do if he decides not to? Not to mention it’s taken him 3 months to get this far.

Problem with roofing contractor?

Posted by: | Comments (5)

After a hail storm I had several people scoping my neighborhood looking to repair roofs, I went ahead and looked at an estimate from one company, i agreed verbally and he commenced in repairing my roof, i paid half of the job upfront and agreed to pay the remainder upon completion. The insurance check is made out to myself and mortgage company; when i let the contractor know that it must be inspected by mortgage company he became upset and said he had never heard such a thing, he had been in roofing for 15 years and never had this problem. (I find that hard to believe) the lien was signed and sent off with the check to mortgage company and i am waiting on inspector. meanwhile the contractor continues to call and harass me, leave nasty messages about the payment due, said he was going to file a lien against my home, etc.
Is the contractor able to file a lien against my home? He has already signed the lien release? The window screens to be replaced have never been delivered, the skylight had a crack in it; he just put the new one in this week! On his invoice there is a charge for debris removal but he left trash all over my yard and the old skylight leaning against my house..also I received 2 sets of invoices, one from the owner and one from a forman, both are completly different amounts of charges but the grand total is the same and on top of that I never even signed his contract? I am tired of being harassed by him, dont know what else to do but I sure dont think I owe as much as he says I do and there is nothing i can do about the mortgage company holding payment! Any suggestions? I live in Texas

I hired what amounts to be a handyman to complete my basement, we settled on a price of $7000 for his labour and I provided all materials, I did front him $500 for misc expenses, I began to notice several mistakes in the drywall in early October and he stated he would repair them, I then got a message on my answering machine a week later stating he hurt his finger and would call me back when he felt better. I never heard from him again when he sent me a bill by mail in January for $5200, problem is he did not do most of the work, what he did do was board and partially sand 1534 sq ft of dry wall he installed 184 sq ft of laminate flooring and installed 6 pre hung doors. Wanting to be fair but also acknowledging he abandoned the job and did poor quality drywalling that I had to hire someone else to finish I have proposed the following
For the boarding and partial finishing of 1534 sq ft of drywall -$1534
For the installation of 6 prehung doors-$240 8 hrs labor@$30/hr
For the installation of 184sq ft of flooring-$276 or $1.50/ sq ft

A total of $2050, I did not have a signed contract and I had to hire others to finish the job, does this sound fair?

Contractor safety in YOUR home

We don’t invite perfect strangers into our homes to look around – it should be the same with contractors or workers – KNOW WHO IS WORKING IN YOUR HOME. Ask for references, insurance and licencing before entering into any agreement with a contractor or Handyman. Dennis McGee, owner of the Mr. Handyman franchise serving Lake, Sumter and Marion counties and beyond, brings his personal and professional knowledge and experience to Hometown Health’s “Healthy Home.”

I’m switching from a recirculating fan to an outside-venting hood in my kitchen, but I need someone to run the ductwork. Any recommendations? It’s a fairly small job, only going about 6 feet with a single 90degree angle I believe, punching through the ceiling and then out through the exterior wall and aluminum siding.
I’m in Fairfax County – how much can I expect to pay (approximately) to run the ductwork?

I’m finding great info on manufactured/mobile homes here. So, anyone know where I can begin to search and choose a good contractor to make repairs and update my home? I have no clue how to go about looking for a person or company to do this. How could I find out if they are any good, quality, reasonable prices?

Repairs include: Tie-down, whole house filtration system, remodel space to fit the water heater and filtration system, carpeting, new shower/tubliners, new sinks, etc.

I’ve watched that show Flip This House and one lady had a contractor she worked with. He directed everything. Basically all she had to do was pay for the materials, his service, the workers (plumber/tile) and paint herself here and there.

Your insights are appreciated!

I have a general maintenance company registered and last year I was contracted to do the maintenance of a big house (cleaning the house and mowing the lawn) 2 x per month from Jan to Dec 2010.
She paid me cash every time, She knows what my services are, she is not in the house when I go there to do my job, I am my own boss, she leaves the money in a kitchen drawer and I have the code to get in the house by the garage door, I do not have a fixed scheduled but I have her in my calendar for every thursday)
I want to do my taxes and I do not know how to report my income…
Should I ask her to give me a form 1099 misc?
Will this be of any benefit for her? will it help her reduce her taxable income? (I want to have answers to all her questions just in case before I talk with her?)
Thank you for your help
