Bet the algae is a yellowish color (mustard). It grows in areas of the pool that have the most shade. Typically in a spa or on a wall of the pool that doesn’t get full sun. Brushes off easily. It’s chlorine resistant. Shocking alone won’t get rid of it. Go to a pool store and ask for a bottle of “Zero Phos.” It’s hard to find, but works like nothing else. Use it per label instructions and the algae will go away. HOWEVER, put everything in the pool when you treat it. Leaf skimmer, brush, vac head and hose, toys, games, floats, etc. Yellow algae has “spores” that are rather like “seeds”. If you don’t treat your brush, for example, then you will reinfect the pool the next time you brush! Wash swim suits before going in again, also. Treat the thing like a communical disease. If you really can’t find “Zero Phos” then get another one called “Yellow Out”. It works, but you have to go through quite an elaborate ritual BEFORE you use it and AFTERWARD as well. Or else you will have the algae right back 2 weeks later.
First make sure the pH level is ok should be 7.0. Then shock it, you may have to do this a couple of times if the algae is really heavy– then make sure you keep pH & chlorine levels balanced
Copper oxide works against fungi’s and algae. A natural method is to hang a couple of short lengths of copper pipe in the reservoir or somewhere in the filter where they won’t do any damage. As they oxidize the resulting copper oxide discourages algae growth.
