I know mechanics have books they can look at that says for ‘such-and-such’ car it will take ‘X’ number of hours to replace an alternator for example. I want one of these books or even a website but I don’t know what to search for. I’ve looked all over and cannot find anything.

nope gl out there on the free onees. you can prolly buy it on ebay for like 7 bucks though and it will come on a CD so thats not so bad

I am considering buying a used car for grandchild. I found a ’95 vw cabriolet for $ 995 and a 2002 vw passat for 1200. Both have high miles (of course) But I would like some knowledge about which car would be the easiest and cheapest to repair(such as replace trans or motor) Both cars are in good condition as to exterior body except the 95 will need to be repainted

The least expensive car to repair would be the one that doesn’t have much or anything wrong with it.

My sister’s car has a lot of problems, and it seems like it would take a while just to identify them. Do you have to pay for their time to figure out the problem or is it free?

Anything they can figure out with the car in-tact should be free, however anything that will require disassembling for troubleshooting will likely cost you something.
Don’t be fooled by free estimates, they can and will take your car apart for free, but you’ll have to pay them to put it back together if you decide you want a second opinion

Not to neccessarily fix my car based on the info, but so I can understand in layman’s terms what does what and for informational purposes only. Lots of diagrams would be wonderful!

go to the sites below and type in the search area for the section you are trying to learn as in brakes. transmission. etc
GL oops forgot if you are lucky go to the libary and get on-line mine has a site called alldata.com in the database it is free @ the lib. if you want a certain diagram ie wiring for your car

My boyfriend said he had a big car repair to do this weekend that I know he had been planning on for weeks. His dad owns a garage and he does his own repairs. He said something I think about a fuel pump, water pump, spark plugs, and some filters. It took him a few hours friday evening, all day saturday, and a few hours sunday. Does this kinda stuff really take this long?
he has a mid 90′s bmw. not sure of the model

Cars are very time consuming. Whenever u fix something you end up with problems or the wrong part. Sometimes u gota run to the store like 5 times before you even start. Foreign cars are especially frustrating because everythings so cramped in there.

Take it to the Cadillac dealership to find out for sure. Get a written estimate for repairs and an opinion on cause.

Also call your auto insurance which will cover the cost under your “comprehensive” coverage minus a $ 50 deductible. SafeLite does all the paper work for you and the insurance company pays them directly.
