Need help with a 3 Way dimmer switch?

Right now, i have two three way switches connected to a kitchen chandolier. I am trying to replace one of the normal Three way Light switch with a three way dimmer switch. After I did this, the lights worked, but the dimmer had no effect. Anybody know how to fix this?

  1. Bud Vet says:

Not sure what brand you have but some require both switches to be a dimmer style for 3 way light switch. Check the box!

  2. Stel2112 says:

Is there cfl’s installed in the light? They won’t dim unless marked ‘dimmable’.

You shouldn’t need a dimmer on each side btw.

  3. Lic. Electrician says:

Stel2112 is correct. Except for some very ‘high end (expensive)’ dimmers, you cannot put dimmers at both ends of the switching. It usually does not matter which switch that you replace with a dimmer.

If the presence of CFL’s is not the problem, it sounds like you may have connected the dimmer wrong. Double-check the 3-way switching. Make sure that the switching itself works. Turn the lights on and off, checking all possible combinations for the switches.
