How much should it cost to repair an altenator?

This is the third altenator I have had to replace in a year. The last 2 are under warranty, however, the shop I took it to wants to charge me $194.00 to repair it. I have a 1999 Ford Taurus and want to know if they are trying to rip me off. Thanks

buy another alt. and replace yourself. not a big deal it does sound like a rip off but the alt. might cost that much.

they should have a warranty on them most do of a year i think (maybe im wrong i dont know). If not then that sucks. anyway, if your burning diodes up in alternators you have a wiring problem that needs fixed

No not really a new alternator is about 90$ if you replace it your self, the rest is just service charge. If you keep burning up alternators you might need a battery with less cranking amps or you have a wiring problem.

Sounds like they are furnishing labor to remove and replace plus fixing it, which I imagine would be about right.
If you can do the work yourself, remove the alternator, get the repair kit, from a parts store for about $25.00 and install. The problem is usually the diode blows and does not put out DC current.
Since this is the third in a year, there is also some problem causing this, so maybe another mechanic is in order.

Price sounds faire to me. It cost me $150 to get my alternator replaced on my 1988 ford ranger. If i were you I would call around to different shops and get some more prices.

that sounds about right but if you have the know how you can do it yourself and save about $100
