    It’s not.
They are just charging you money. They might go into safemode to take out the virus, but not something you couldn’t do.

Not much difference other than expertise on certain issues.

I would do weekly anti virus scans and keep ur anti virus software updated.
I would also recommed that you install Malware bytes anti malware. Great product to clear everything else your antivirus misses.

heres the link for download at the their website:

it is free and works great and creates a log for you to see.
make sure you update it everytime before using.

    Best of luck,

Hey Joseph, my name is Frank but you can call me Frankie (that is what my friends call me). My profession is a Network Administrator and I’ve received this question quite a few times before.

No, a computer shop will not have a special antivirus that only they have access too however they will have numerous antivirus programs which can be run to ensure it is clean. It is a fact that there is not 1 specific antivirus program that is 100% sure to protect your computer. There are always viruses that one antivirus will catch but another will miss, so running multiple scans with different antiviruses can help.

Also “cleaning” your computer isn’t just about removing a virus, there is also registry fixes that can be done, cleaning out temporary files, deleting duplicate content (data management), removing spyware/adware (different from viruses), stopping various services/programs from starting up that you don’t use all the time (which slow your PC down), and the list goes on..

    I hope this helps!

They have “commercial” versions which have larger database files and are more up-to-the-minute.
You are right to an extent, there is really no difference other than they can scan from an external source which is not affected.

A computer repair shop has access to exactly the same software and other resources that you do.

What you get when you pay a computer repair shop to clean out your computer is EXPERT KNOWLEDGE. Don’t underestimate the value of this.

A good example of expert knowledge adding value…

A typical computer user considers software like Norton to be high end and very effective. The EXPERT knows that Norton anything is the worst piece of crap available at any price, and would not only NOT use Norton…but would advise you not to use Norton, either.

    True story…

A few years ago, my nephew brought me his system. His FIL had (being helpful, he thought) installed Norton Security software on the system several months before my nephew brought the system to me. My nephew brought the system to me as he couldn’t get it to connect to the Internet.

Norton Antivirus software was properly installed AND FULLY UPDATED. But as I was working with the system, I started to suspect that the Internet problem was caused by virus activity.

Scanning the system with AVG (a freeware antivirus) revealed thousands of files infected with dozens of viruses.

To fix that computer, I had to uninstall everything norton and install a decent antivirus. I also scanned the computer with three different antivirus programs to be SURE that his system was clean. He hasn’t had a problem with that system since. That was a few years ago.

With Norton installed, the computer was literally over-run with all kinds of viruses that Norton was happy to ignore. This happened in a few months.

With AVG (freeware), the system has remained clean for years.

Basically, if you think Norton is good, you should probably hire a professional to clean up your system. I’m not saying that to put you down at all. But simply put, EXPERIENCE counts!!! If you want it fixed right, hire a pro.

And in the future, do not install NOR ALLOW ANYONE to install Norton products. At best, it is bloatware. At worst, it ignores very serious security problems.
