How do I re-install windows vista home premium after installing a new hard drive?
I am trying to repair a friend’s computer. It is a compaq presario c700 series model C762NR. It had a hard drive failure so I had to install a new one. Everything seems to be working fine. I ran both the memory and hard drive tests and they all passed. I was told to buy recovery disks from HP (by HP support) so I did. The system restore fails every single time. It seems to be system.logs FAILED. How can I re-install the operating system? Do I have to buy the $150+ Windows Vista DVD?
I would appreciate some help. The laptop is out of warranty and my friend can not afford a new laptop at this time.
Thank you.

It’s possible you got the wrong recovery discs or the system isn’t compatible with the recovery discs for some reason. My recommendation is to just get Windows itself instead of using the recovery discs. Then after it’s installed, if any drivers are missing, go to the HP support site and find and download the appropriate drivers for the system.
