i have an old fuji espree, its a nice bike but i cant get it to ride smoothly. is there anything i can do to fix the gears from making that crunching sound? i really dont want to take it in to a shop…last time the repairs ended up costing more than the bike!

better go to a repair shop.
oil the chain and gears and check the tutorials for adjusting gears on the Bicycle Tutor website
Try this site it will tell you how to do about everything.
Parktool.com is another great site. They have all the recommended tools you need and where to find/buy them. If your gears are making a crunching sound it could be many things. Many people mistake the crunching of gears to be a cranky bottom bracket or loose cranks. However, if you are not degreasing and oiling your chain with a light chain lube, your chain is probably destroyed. I recommend getting a new one. Your rollers in your derailleur could also be seizing due to low maintenance. It’s a common mistake to assume that you barely rode the bike this week, it doesn’t need care. “I’ll clean it next week” sort of a thing. That’s how bikes deteriorate. Start by checking over everything here: Or at least familiarize yourself with this site so that you don’t keep getting ripped off at the bike shop.
install new cables and housing, if the bike is old then the cables are probably ready for a replacement. Get a kit like this, it has everything you need to redo your shifter cables. $16
You need a cable cutter too. (Wire cutters won’t work they only crush the housing) $16
this has happend to me. the hanger is cracked u might wanna take it to a bike shop
