How can I best remove water from soaked carpeting?

During the night, my toilet overflowed and water soaked into the bedroom carpets about 1/3 of the way into the rooms. I need to know if I should rent a carpet cleaner to remove as much water as possible.

get as much as you can up with a shop vac then put a fan in the room aimed at the wet area.. should be dry in 24 to 48 hours.
What edward said is correct just remember to remove the filter first
Truthfully, having done this project with both a shop vac and a carpet cleaner, go rent the carpet cleaner. It will do a better job and it will be easier on you. Your back with thank you. The carpet cleaner will be much easier to empty, not fall over every time you turn around and they have a lot more suction.
Make multiple passes until no water comes up into the machine before moving on to another section. Open windows, doors, set up fans, anything to increase air circulation for at least the next week. If you have one, a dehumidifier will also help pull the moisture out of the air and help things dry faster. If you have a basement below, open that up and increase the air circulation down there. Gravity will pull the water downwards. I’d keep the increased air flow up for at least a couple weeks in the basement. Once again, the dehumidifier will help.
