Question by reeree: Is it legal for a car repair to keep your car.?
My daughter took my car in for a repair estimate. I did not give permission for repair. They claim she did.The cost was 800.00 wich I did not have at the time. They say now I owe 1400.00 and the price will go up, until I can get it. Is this legal in PA.

Best answer:

Answer by larmarine83
Ask them for the signed estimate proving that the repairs were authorized. If they cannot produce this, tell them you will be there as soon as you can with your local Police department to get your vehicle, and anyone who refuses to hand over your property will be arrested for Grand Theft Auto.

If they CAN produce it, and your daughter did sign to approve the repairs, then she is liable for the charges. You MAY be able to take it to court and get your car arguing that the owner of the vehicle did not authorize the repairs, but its a long shot, and if you won, you daughter would be on the hook for the cost.

Question by R J: What is the cheapest make or model (of used car) to repair?
My friend needs a stopgap for a year or so to wait for her credit to get better to purchase a new car. Her old car is breaking down more often, she wants to buy a used car, doesn’t want to lease. Wants to spend less than 5k. As far as possible repair costs are concerned, what is the cheapest, safest make/model to look for?

She needs enough room in the trunk to fit a wheelchair to transport her grandma, etc. She wants good gas mileage (30+). What is a reliable used car to buy that will work as well on it’s 100k’s as it did in it’s 10k’s?

Best answer:

Answer by Spee
Mitsubishi Galant 4-cyl from 2000-2001. They are reliable and depreciate quickly. Gas mileage is not that great. How the heck are you going to find an old car that fits a wheelchair and gets over 30 mpg? Be realistic.

Since your friend needs a car that can fit a wheelchair, she can look at the older Mitsubishi SUVs, like a Montero Sport. But you are not going to find a car that gets 30 mpg unless you get a Civic, Corolla, or Prizm. Those cars hold their value much better, and thus might seem expensive.

Do you mean 30 mpg stated value or 30 mpg actual value with real world driving conditions? They are very different. You’d have to drive 55 mph on the highway, coast a lot, and minimize acceleration to get the best mileage, which will probably still be less than the stated mileage. If fuel efficiency is very important, look at Toyotas and Hondas with 4-cyl engines.

What do you think? Answer below!

Question by Terry: I would like to stir up some business for my car repair garage, any pointers?
I have just opened and i do not have thousands to spend on ad’s etc. so was would like to hear what you guys think are the best cost effective ways of attracting customer for a local car repair garage like mine. I currently do all kinds of car repairs including body work and engine repairs. I do have a few competitors in the area but i have the best looking garage in the area and was hoping i could use this to my advantage. Unfortunately my workshop is not located on a busy main road…

Best answer:

Answer by sre011175
Word of mouth…this line of business it notorious for ripping off women or people who just don’t know better. Be honest and people will start noticing that and that will be the biggest advantage you will have over your competitors.

Ok, so I’m only 16, but I’ve recently taken something of an interest in fixing and restoring cars. I realize pretty much every model is built differently, but are there any books that I could read that could give a basic understanding of how they are built and repaired in general? Thanks!

Answer by thesloaneranger
its great to hear someone young interested in restoration! nice one!

haynes publish a great range of books, covering all sorts of things which can help you. there are marque-specific restoration manuals as well as more generic ones such as bodywork repair and autoelectrics. these can be picked up very cheaply from ebay.

another good book to read is hilliers fundementals of motor vehicle technology. its very heavy and quite technical, but is filled with everything you could ever need to know as to how each system in a car operates. i was given this book when i studied motor vehicle repair at college so it cant be bad!

go to your local second hand book shop and see what there is though – theres plenty of books that were printed explaining how a car works and how they go together that are not totally relevant to modern cars, but for classics they can be invaluable, especially when talking about things like carbs and dynamos.

good luck and i hope you enjoy your future projects! x
