And then there are those port scanner programs hackers use, scanning the Internet for vulnerable PCs. Some sites, such as Shields Up, make great play of this, especially having the key Netbios ports 135-139 open, but fail to clearly explain exactly what hackers can do with them.
The fact is that even if a hacker did interrogate these ports, all they would retrieve is your computer and workgroup name, along with its description â?? no big deal for a stand alone home system. Still, you may want to close these ports anyway.
There are also personal firewall programs which can detect and stop attempted probes into your system. Windows XP comes with a firewall by default, but this is a one way firewall. A more secure, and free firewall is zone alarm. If you are a novice its best to stick with the default Windows firewall, but if youâ??re a more advanced user and familiar with most technical details on your computer then you may consider it best to install a more secure firewall like Zone Alarm, or something else.
Firewalls can detect and stop probes into your system. If your system is properly secured, any probes will have no effect at all, so all the firewall is doing is telling you about them. Itâ??s better to spend time checking your computerâ??s security rather than spend money on a firewall.
The Real Danger
Anyone who knows about Trojans will realize that itâ??s not entirely safe out there. A Trojan differs from a virus in that it appears to be a useful program, which you happily install and use. Unfortunately for you, the apparent function masks something much nastier. The real payload can be anything the author likes, but the particular type of program weâ??re interested in is known as a â??backdoor Trojanâ??.
One of the worst is known as SubSeven. Once youâ??ve installed the active part (the â??serverâ??, which can be bound to any other EXE file so youâ??ll never know whatâ??s going on), it attempts to broadcast to its author via IRC every time you go online. They can then use the â??clientâ?? part of the program to literary take over your computer. Of course, itâ??s unlikely to do anything dramatic immediately, but the potential features are very dangerous indeed.
It can log key presses, for example, even while offline, then transmit them to the author, so anything you type (passwords, credit card numbers) is at risk. Wrong, Unfortunately â?? take a look at SubSeven. Anyone can download the program, and even get help about how to use it, just like any other software package. Itâ??s easy and itâ??s free; kids could set it up (and some probably do).
But surely your anti virus program will be able to detect it? Well, maybe, but the author of SubSeven has a way to bypass that. New versions are released frequently, with more powerful features than the last, and once the server part is installed on your system it can be updated remotely. This means that by the time your anti virus software knows how to pick up one version, the copy on your system might be quite different.
And whatâ??s more. SubSeven is only one program with these capabilities. There are hundreds, maybe thousands of programs exactly like SubSeven equally capable of permitting others to access files on your computer. Trojans like this are the biggest Internet threat to the security of your system, so what can you do to protect yourself from them?
Get the Right Advice
One thing you should not do is simply download and use the first Trojan detection program you can lay your cursor on. Beware also legitimate software that makes excessive promises. Promises that it will detect and remove all known and unknown Trojans. If itâ??s that good, why is the program already at version seven?
All detection software requires frequent updates just to keep up, and no one can guarantee to defeat all future threats.

Posted by: | CommentsSitting in a meadow at dawn. Huddling around a fire roasting marsh mellows. Gazing into galaxies far far away, pondering life’s deepest questions. For me, camping is a tranquil escape from the hustle-bustle of everyday life. Living in a city has it advantages, but it also means dealing with traffic, inflated prices, long lines and paying for parking, which is why I retreat to the mountains as much as possible. My gear’s security is the last thing on my mind when I’m scaling a gargantuan mountain, but last weekend I came back from a long hike only to find my tailgate hanging wide open and my belongings missing.
I haven’t had anything stolen in the city, which has a ridiculously high crime rate, but when I go to an area where the deer population vastly outnumbers the people, my truck is broken into. How ironic. Don’t ya think? After this past week of work, I was dieing to get away. So I laced up my hiking boots, packed my gear, and took off. I was headed for a weekend away from work, crowds, and most importantly, my wife—two nights alone, just me and my yellow lab, Jasper.
The second we get out of the city I’m hit with feelings of relief. I lower the windows, turn of the ac, and let out a sigh as Jasper and I breathe in that cool mountain air. As the road begins to twist and turn, bringing us up the mountainside, I can tell we are close. “This is more like it,” I thought. Just a guy and his dog, getting away for the weekend; that’s all we are—nice, slightly creepy, but nice.
I pull off the paved road and pull into a small secluded parking lot. Jasper can tell from the gravel crunching under my tires that we have arrived. I pop open the door and he barges out; trying to take in all the scents like a kid scoping out the presents under the tree on Christmas morning. We have a few hours of sun light left so I decided to hold off on pitching the tent and setting up camp. I needed some exercise and a hike to the summit is just what the doctor ordered.
The weather is perfect. The temperature is just right and the cool air fends off pesky bugs. I march up the trail at a nice quick pace, which Jasper has no problem following. From the openness of the trail, I can tell that it is a well-traveled path. Luckily, I was the only car in the parking lot and hadn’t seen anyone else in miles. I soon reach the summit and it is gorgeous. The green seems to go for miles in every direction. I plot down on a tree stump to take it all in—the sounds of a babbling brook, birds chirping, the setting sun. I’m on top of the world. I look toward the base of the mountain. Oh nice, there is the parking lot. Wait a minute. Is someone taking breaking into my truck? I shoot up and race down the trail. Jasper breaks out in a gallop next to me. We finally make it down to the lot, sweaty and exhausted, to find my tailgate hanging open. I have a pick up truck with a truck bed cover over it, but the actually tailgate door doesn’t have a lock. I rip off my cover and all of my gear is gone. You have got to be kidding me. I look around in all directions and the only thing I find is a sign. It read, “Caution. Secure Valuables in Car.” It wasn’t the hundreds of dollars of camping equipment that hurt the most. It was that my place of solitude and tranquility had been tainted—and that I had to go home for a weekend with my wife.
How will I be able to move on and continue with my life you ask? I now have a Tailgate Lock, which can secure all my goods. It doesn’t lock if I have my Truck Bed extender attached, but at least now I know not to store anything in there. -Mike Rosania

Anti-lock Braking and Its Importance
Posted by: | CommentsThe ABS (Anti-Lock Braking) in one of the most important elements of a modern vehicle’s braking system. It works by a specialized computer activating the brake pumps so that during a powerful deceleration the wheels will not lock-up and you will be able to steer the car under such a circumstance. The situation was different before this system’s introduction. When you used to press powerfully the brake pedal, the system was fully activated permanently and the wheels blocked. This resulted in very numerous crashes, and a popular method among drivers to avoid brake lock-up was to pump the brakes.
With the introduction of ABS however these problems were solved, because the electronics does everything. An ABS fitted braking system will pump the brakes up to 15 times per second. You have to admit that no driver could match this performance.
You might ask yourself how ABS works.
Each wheel is fitted with sensors. They scan continuously the movement of each wheel and when they sense that a wheel has stopped, which is the case with a powerful braking, this sensor will transmit the ABS computer a signal. The computer will regulate the pressure in the braking system for all four wheels accordingly and this way wheel lock-up is reduced.
The computer will direct the braking pump to increase and reduce pressure in the system a few dozen times per second all the time the brake pedal is pressed. The driver can steer the car almost normally, because he will have control of the wheels in avoiding an obstacle, for example.
You can hear and feel the ABS when it enters the scene, you will feel some short movements in the brake pedal and you will hear a distinct sound.
Your breaking distances will not be reduced if your car is fitted with ABS. It has other purposes, to allow you to handle the car in a case when a powerful brake is necessary. There may be situations when ABS braking will actually increase the braking distance of the vehicle. If you have to brake forcefully and an obstacle appears in front of you, you will be able to drive around it and not crush into it.
The entire job is done by specialized computers and sensors. The driver is not obliged to do anything special, just to use the brakes in the normal way, braking and keeping the brake pedal pushed. Do not use the pumping technique when driving an ABS fitted car, because the actual pumping is being done by the system.
The early systems were rear-wheel ABS, which pumped only the rear wheels. They have been used quite some time ago in SUVs and pick-up trucks and are no longer produced. Today almost all cars are manufactured with four-wheel ABS as standard equipment. In this case, the system uses the sensors at each wheel to pump them all, individually, according to the situation. It is the most efficient system, the more precise, but it is the most expensive one to implement. Some less expensive cars are fitted with a three-channel system.
