Roofing, Flashing & Waterproofing (For Pros By Pros) Reviews

Although this book is a collection of articles taken from Fine Homebuilding magazine, there is much to learn from. Covers nearly every type of roofing material including 3-tab, architectural, metal, slate, aluminum, and more. Also covers every aspect from tear-off to underlayment and flashing. Very helpful and useful.

I have ordered several books in the For Pros by Pros series. This book is just like the others in this series. It is informative, detailed and good reading. Even if you care not to apply this information as a DIY’er you will be well informed if you plan to hire a roofing company to repair or replace roofing. I had my roofing replaced eight years ago and I wish I had read this book then. This book would have given me the knowledge to correctly select materials, emphasize specific procedures, oversee the work knowledgeably and to finally inspect the completed work. This is great information to have for a few dollars when considering a 00-00 roofing job.

Smart Guide: Roofing: Step-by-Step Projects Reviews

Lots of practical ‘job’ descriptions: replacing shingles, repairing leaks, finding leaks, etc. Many useful cartoons describing the process. Good advice on assessing the condition of the roof to determine how much needs to be replaced. Nice suggestions for preparing flashing to chimneys.
Not much commentary of types of weather. I’m in the Southwest. We have 100 degree plus for several months each summer and freezes in the winter. I’ve got heat damaged composition shingles, but there wasn’t any commentary on finding materials or roof design to overcome this problem.
Additionally, I’m interested in metal roofs. They are popular in my areas. There was only a short section on alternative roofs: rolled, slate, tile, metal (about 2 pages on each type roof). Basically advises against doing any of these yourself. The pages mainly serve to dissuade one from trying it.
Not much on project planing. For example, a ‘do-it-yourself’er will want to break the project into multiple weekend operations. There is no advice on this subject. The biggest problem is the lack of commentary on weather, ie advice on which type of roof is best.
Following is a chapter summary
Chapter 1: Materials
Chapter 2: Basic repairs (tracking roof leaks, making temporary roof repairs, making permanent shingle repairs, repairing wood shingles and shakes, repairing and replacing flashing repairing facia and eaves damage
Chapter 3 Flashing: tear off or reroof, applying underlayment, applying flashing, valley flashing
Chapter 4 asphalt shingles: selecting composition shingles, estimating materials on gable roofs, installing the starter course, applying the starter courses, nailing shingles properly, basic shingling shingling a stair step pattern, roofing the valleys, air vents and plumbing stacks, shingling ridges
chapter 5 wood singles (who uses wood?)
chapter 6 build up roofing : coping with flat roofs , installing rolling roofing, double coverage rolling roofing
chapter 7, other roofing, slate roofing, tile roofing, metal roofing, panel roofing
chapter 8 ventilation
Here are some comments that caught my attention:
Getting shingles up on the roof is easy to ignore until you start lifting stuff by hand. The shingles packages weigh 75 pounds each and represent a read moving problem. Alternatives include:
1. Have the shingle provider put them on the roof
2. get a ladder conveyer.
low slopes:
2-4 per 12 slope: use square tab singles with double underlayment and roofing cement. less than 2 per 12 cannot be use covered with composition ‘tab’ shingles

This is a good book to use in planning what type of roof or siding that would
suit your project. Then buy a book how to work that particular roof or
siding.

Helpful. Helps clue you in if you have never done roofing or siding work before. Won’t magically turn you into a tradesperson (nothing can without on-the-job experience), but will clue you in on how stuff is done. I imagine that even people in the trade might benefit from it, if only to see variations on the way that their own company does things.

Milwaukee 7120-21 3/4- to 1-3/4-Inch Coil Roofing Nailer
Milwaukee’s Heavy-Duty Coil Roofing Nailer features an ultra lightweight magnesium housing to minimize fatigue. Its compact size offers greater maneuverability. The Load-N-Go magazine holds 120 galvanized wire collated nails from 3/4 in. to 1-3/4 in. length and .120 in. diameter. A magnet holds the nail in place making loading fast and efficient. The thick rubber guards minimize housing damage. The tool-free depth of drive protects from overdriving nails. The self-cleaning air filter extends life by preventing dirt and debris from entering the tool. The adjustable air deflector with muffler directs exhaust away from the work area and holds down the noise. The textured selectable trigger lets you move from sequential or contact actuation by simply turning a knob. A removable shingle guide assists in quick shingle alignment. This coil roofing nailer is one of seven new heavy-duty air-powered nailers from the venerable Milwaukee, and the whole series is another testament to the red label’s unflagging quality. At the top of our list is how incredibly light Milwaukee’s nailers are, even fully loaded, and their compact size makes them a cinch to tote and use, especially in awkward positions. But a close second is the clever inclusion of a magnet that holds onto the nails as you’re loading and significantly speeds up the process, reducing fumbling and dropped fasteners. Another big tip of the hat to Milwaukee for incorporating both sequential and bump firing modes, accessible just by turning a knob, so when speed is a need, you’re ready to go, but precision is at your fingertips too. We like the quality built into this tool, from the magnesium housing to the rugged rubber bumper guard that protects your investment should the tool take a fall. The hassle-free replaceable nosepiece has hard-wearing carbide inserts, and there’s even a self-cleaning

Milwaukee 7120-21 3/4- to 1-3/4-Inch Coil Roofing Nailer Reviews

First off. I do not do roofing full time, I am a remodeler, I do a few houses a year. The guy I work with has the Hitachi NV45AB but we needed to have another gun this fall. I buy nothing but high quality tools, and most professional roofers use the Hitachi. I did a lot of comparing before I decided on this gun. The thing that got me was the price, I got a very good deal on this gun from the contractor tool store.
After using this gun and the Hitachi NV45AB on three roofs last month(about 100 square), here are my observations. (I have used the Hitachi for a few years)
The Milwaukee is lighter without a doubt, much nicer to carry around all day.
The nail loading mechanism is much nicer on the Milwaukee. You only have to open the feed flip, and the coil comes open too. The hitachi has a separate clip to open the coil, and it is underneath so you have to turn the gun upsidedown to load it. (that may seem like not a big deal, but when you are putting in a new coil every 5 minutes it is a big deal)(I believe hitachi’s new nailer has the side load mechanism as well)
The rubber side grips are nice, it will stay on a 7/12 pitch.
You can move the shingle guide without an allen wrench.
It shot 1-3/4 nails much better than the hitachi.
I am not sure why they put sequential and bump firing modes on this gun. If you want to have any speed at all you will always use bump mode. Anyways, that isnt a problem, it just seems strange on a roofing gun.
It is comfortable to use, and I never had any jams. It comes with a nice molded case.

I was a little apprehensive about purchasing a tool that is brand new to the market, but having owned and operated various Milwaukee power tools for a number of years, and reading other reviews of this specific coil nailer, I decided to give it a go. I am a professional contractor and have used Porter Cable coil roofing nailers before trying the Milwaukee. I found the Milwaukee to be very smooth, and experienced minimal jams. It also required less air pressure to achieve proper nail driven depth, although this posed to be an issue as I was running Porter Cable nailers on the same line. I added an additional pressure regulator and took care of that problem. The bumpers on the gun proved to be useful a number of times and prevented the gun from sliding off the roof. I gave the nose attachment a whirl (for auto-positioning the nails by butting the attachment up against the shingle edge) but found it to be an annoyance as well as slowing me down. Coil changes were very easy – quicker and smoother than the Porter Cable. I’ll replace one of my PC guns with another Milwaukee when it fails.

The Business of Re-Roofing: An Owner’s Manual
People do not generally describe their reason for being in the roofing business by saying, “It’s fun, exciting, and I really love helping people.” They do it because there is a demand for it and because they can make money doing it. Sometimes, if they do almost everything right, they can make a lot of money doing it. Sometimes, if they do almost everything right, they can lose their shirts. Likewise, either of those results can occur when they do almost everything wrong. It’s a perplexing business. In the uniquely entertaining guide The Business of Re-Roofing: An Owner’s Manual, author Neal Middleton provides a clear, concise roadmap for long-term success in the roofing business. The formula Middleton outlines in The Business of Re-Roofing: An Owner’s Manual is valid, tested, and proven in a variety of circumstances, from the fast-paced and highly competitive marketplace of the Washington, D.C. Metro area, to small markets like Stroudsburg, PA. It’s not a theory, or a speculation, or a hypothesis. It simply works—and it can help you create a successful re-roofing business!
