Repair is body work in C. K. Williams’s sensual poems, but it is also an imaginative treatment of the consternations that interrupt life’s easy narrative. National Book Critics Circle Award-winner Williams keeps the self in repair despite love, death, social disorder, and the secrets that separate and join intimates. These forty poems experiment with form but maintain what Alan Williamson has heralded Williams for having so steadily developed from French influences: “the poetry of the sentence.”
Randall Jarrell famously compared the likelihood of writing a good poem to that of being struck by a meteor. If that’s the case, C.K. Williams has been defying the odds for almost 20 years, ever since he published Tar. That collection, which appeared in 1983, marked the debut of his poetic signature: the lengthy, elaborately discursive line, packed to the gills with novelistic detail. And since then, with Flesh and Blood and The Vigil, he’s only refined his methods. At times Williams seems to be working that no man’s land between prose and verse, daring us to read him as a rococo Raymond Carver–an Ash Can School unto himself. I have been an admiring reader of C.K. Williams since picking up a copy of “With Ignorance” from a new publication shelf in my college library, some twenty years ago. I have continued, volume after volume with Williams. Something that I can say for only a few poets. In “Repair” Williams is moving into new territory, beginning to move away exclusively from the long line that has come to represent his work. The poetry of the older Williams is as distinguished as his earlier work. He has found a new sense of calm and belonging not found in previous books. I can only recommend that someone who is new to C.K. Williams, should search out his earlier volumes. He is a great American poet and he continues only to satisfy.

Williams has nor stayed with the uniformly long and sometimes exhausting lines of his previous work, and shows us what can be done with briefer forms. The book reminds me of a visit to an ancient English home, in which a visitor wondered “How do they get that wonderful finish?” An attendant leaned forward and said “400 years of elbow grease Madam.” The poems in ‘Repair’ are complex and multi-layered, the evidence of many years of elbow grease, and much mature reflection. I am privileged to be able to learn from them.

I loved this book! I am a single female, and my dad bought it for me when I bought my first house. This product does an OK job, but don’t expect any miracles unless you are a world class artist and can mix the perfect color. It fixed the hole in my leather office chair, but it isn’t perfect.

You have to be an artist to match the color correctly. Even if you get it to match when the mix is wet, the color changes somewhat when it dries. Looked better with the small whole than it does now.

There are certain skills that are “wasted” on no one. Home repair is one such skill. I believe that 5 weeks after purchasing this book – the book has already paid for itself. My parents moved back into my grandmother’s 1960-era house after she passed away last year. The house was in need of a few repairs, but money was a limiting factor. I had to find a way to teach myself (and my dad) how to weatherproof the basement, replacing an ancient water heater & dishwasher, replace several outlets with new GFCI (p. 397!) outlets, and finally, how to update the upstair’s faucets and fixtures. I logged onto Amazon.com and typed-in HOME REPAIR. To be honest, I chose this book because it had 500+ pages and two 5-star reviews. When this book arrived, I instantly felt the weight and quality of the binding.(think college textbook material) I quickly found DETAILED descriptions of the tasks I would soon have to perform. I called my father and said “Get ready we’re going to Home Depot!” On the phone, my father expressed concern over our lack of experience. When my father got in my truck, I handed him the the Black&Decker text. I had put PostIt’s on the pages with our projects. He slipped on his glasses and peered through his bi-focals and didn’t say a word on the way to purchase tools & supplies. Once in the parking lot, I could hardly turn-off the engine before he was pointing to pictures saying “Ours looks just like this! I want some gloves like that!” And he was making a bee-line for the door!(the old man can move!) He was excited and so was I. Now, it has beeen 5 weeks since that first trip to Home Depot. Both my father and I have the cuts and scrapes and the ever present sore backs to prove that we have done our own home repairs. My father now keeps the Black&Decker text at his house “for safe keeping.” He cleans the text with a moist cloth after each project. The projects don’t seem to have an end in sight, which I believe is a direct result of my dad reading the text for “suggestions.” My suggestion….don’t let anyone “borrow” this text, unless of course – you love him!

I just bought this book and really love it. It’s simple and easy to understand, and considering that I have never done much home repair before, this was a plus. It’s the hammer and nail equivilent to that Betty Crocker cookbook we’ve all be hauling around for years. Always something new that you never knew you needed!
