Quick Repair (radio) Before Long Thanksgiving Drive!! Help!!!?
ByOk, so I drive an 86′ Z31 Turbo , and had a new Alternator installed about 6 months ago, at the time radio worked… no it stopped working and I noticed the repair guy ran a green cable into my fuse box, I went back and to ask what it was and he told me not to bring it in cause it wasn’t worth the money and I could probably figure it out in a few minutes..
now it’s thanksgiving and if I have to drive with no radio I’m gonna go crazy.. here are symptoms…. HELP!!
1. Radio DOES power on, and the EQ lights do move, so they are getting a sound signal.
2. That model uses the cars speakers to tell you gas is low, oil, doors open etc.. so I assume the speakers work
3. When I change the station on the radio or put or the tape/CD adapter, the speakers make a whiney noise, to me that more reassurance they work

Does your stereo have an external (under the dash or somewhere) power amp? Those symptoms sound just like what would be if the stereo’s preamp outputs were disconnected from the amp’s low level inputs. You’d get what LOOKED like a good working radio and the whine/random noise through the speakers, but no audio signal to the speakers.
I was you, I’d try to follow that new green wire and see where it goes and see if it goes anywhere near the stereo and look for an RCA type cable hanging loose or something unplugged where it shouldn’t be. The tech may have disturbed some of your stereo wiring or the connector at the back of the radio (maybe it’s not fully plugged in anymore and only certain connections are being made such as power and ground and only part of the speaker connections.).
If your stereo doesn’t have an external amp, you might be SOL because then the fault is internal to the radio and the only solution is remove and repair.
From what you describe, the problem is definitely between the radio receiver and the amplifier part of the unit. (amp input side-the alternator whine through the speakers you described says the final audio amp is working-it’s just not receiving an audio input signal.).
